George Lucas’s Industrial Light & Magic to open Sydney studio

Published on

The visual effects company behind the Star Wars franchise will set up a base in Sydney, with the Premier saying it will be a huge boost for Australia's film industry.

Industrial Light Magic or ILM, was set up by George Lucas in 1975, to create the iconic visual effects for his first Star Wars movie.

Since then ILM has also worked on the Indiana Jones series, and the Avengers franchise.

Today it was announced the global company will soon offer more than 500 local jobs at its new base at Fox Studios in Sydney's Moore Park.

Premier Gladys Berejiklian has called it a proud moment.

"It means Sydney cements itself as the movies capital of Australia," she said.

ILM will also establish a "Jedi Academy" training program for Australians who want a career in the visual effects industry.
